Their History
This Austrian company has been around in one form or the other since the 1930s. The full form of KTM earlier stood for ‘Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen’, with ‘Kraftfahrzeug’ meaning ‘motor vehicle’, ‘Trunkenpolz’ being the name of the founder Hans Trunkenpolz and Mattighofen being the small Austrian town where KTM’s headquarters are located.
In its earliest years, KTM was a vehicle repair shop. However, after the war, the demand for repairs dropped so Trunkenpolz began to focus on making motorcycles instead. He made his initial prototype, the R100, in 1951. Then the shareholder Ernst Kronreif became a part of the company and his surname replaced the ‘K’ in KTM.
In the early 60s, both Trunkenpolz and Kronreif passed away and Han’s son Erich Trunkenpolz took over the company. It was under his leadership that the company went through constant expansion, even branching out to the United States in 1978. After his death in 1989, the company underwent some changes and even split into four separate entities in 1992. By 2015, the KTM Group had gathered three of the four splinters.
Despite all these changes and the ups and downs of the market, KTM continued to produce remarkable motorcycles for both the European and American markets.
AMA Supercross Championship
When it comes to the highly-competitive, high-pressure world of Supercross, less is often more. Winner motorcycles have to be sleek and simple while displaying consistent performance and maintaining high speeds.
KTM motorcycles cemented their place in the racing world by bagging their first Motorcross World Championship in 1974. Since then, the company’s racing bikes have brought them over 260 world championship titles. The competition-ready line of KTM motorcycles are usually orange, black and silver in color which makes them instantly recognizable on the track.
Off-Road Motorcycles
Along with championship bikes, their other most popular products are the off-road KTM motorcycles, which include Motocross, Cross-Country, Enduro, and Freeride. The Enduro is a street-legal powerhouse that glides over both dirt and asphalt with ease. The Motocross and Cross-Country lines have won many racing competitions for the company and remain highly popular with bikers. The Freeride is a cross between KTM’s trails and Enduro bikes and is ideal for off-road riding.
